Boring No More... Solo Exhibition (online only as per COVID lockdown)
‘Boring No More’
Exhibition dates: Wed 14th - Sun 25th July (online only)
Open Studio Day: CANCELLED
Early this year, I moved my art studio from the beach to the epicenter of Brookvale; in the middle of the industrial area in the Northern Beaches of Sydney. This had a dramatic impact on my practice. Changing the sea views for graffiti walls was unfamiliar initially but it didn’t take long to start getting used to the buzzing sounds of distant trucks unloading, the smell of recently brewed coffee, the coordinated chant from the jiu-jitsu gym.
I surrendered to the new vibes and understood that being surrounded by raw materials for construction sites woke up an old but familiar feeling in me, and working with bare hands brought memories that I thought were lost.
I started experimenting with the incorporation of construction materials and enjoying the manual labour involved. The feeling is very different from painting, where brushes act like a middleman. Now, my hands force the material into a change and this manipulation raises other sensations that are more intimate taking me back to the days when I spent hours in the operating theatre. Then, the patient's outcome was dependent on my fine motor skills. It’s amazing how everything connects.
‘Boring No More’ is the core motto of this series. I promised myself at the beginning of the year that I was going to make this, the year of FUN. When we are having FUN we are present in the moment. FUN allows us to escape from thoughts of past sadness or from insecurities of what the future holds.
I hope that the challenges and difficulties of last year helped us all grow as better humans and do wish we can all incorporate FUN in our lives no matter what comes our way. ‘Boring No More’ is meant to inspire people to live a happier and more plentiful life with the resources they might have at hand.
The goal of Open Studio Days is to generate a tide that rises us all, so to complement my exhibition and the core value behind it; 15% of the artwork sales will be donated to Beyond Blue Australia; a cause that is very close to my heart.
