May your dreams come true...
Opportunities in life sometimes arrive in the most unexpected ways.
Earlier this year, I suffered an injury to my hand which prevented me from being able to perform my clinical job. This as you can imagine, was very distressing, as the thought of not being able to provide for my family consumed me. In the midst of all these emotions, I was sent home to recover from my injury for approximately three months. Scary and overwhelming as it was, I found myself in a very fortunate situation. I haven’t lost my job, my wage was paid under workers’ compensation and I have been given (unintentionally) the gift of TIME!
Time to organize my small art business, to put things in a balance, to assess my future. Lockdown did help me to make profound and insightful explorations but of course, while the rest of the family members were caught in their tenth zoom meeting of the day, I also was done with thinking. This is when I started playing with the idea of recreating things that make me happy - in the ‘Sound of Music’ sort of way.
I started painting and drawing childhood memories with my non-injured hand. Soon these experiments opened a new path in which I have been having so much fun working: The POP series.
Pop means to explode, to burst open, to push, to strike. It is a word that can be used in multiple contexts and that has heaps of different connotations. It is fresh to the ear, simple, fun; almost cute.
This collection of works is an all-embracing burst of creativity, free play, and games. It is bright, light, and feels like a bit of fresh air. I have intentionally ignored traditional painting rules and although the works are inspired by innocent subjects, they are loaded with emotional content.
By using multiple materials, bright colors, and layering techniques, these works are an invitation to observational awareness of our younger version. For me, each work has a very special story behind it, but the invitation is to get the viewer to bring their own stories to the conversation.
I’ll be interested to see where this exploration takes me. So far, I like how it feels so I’ll follow its call.
In the meantime,
May your dreams come true…
